Diabetes Disease process overview
This lecture provides an overview of the diabetes disease process and management. Strategies for prevention of complications associated with diabetes are also discussed, in addition to essential self-management skill for optimal blood glucose control.
Basic Nutrition and Meal Planning
This class provides the tools to help individuals better understand the role of nutrition in their management of diabetes. Emphasis is placed on the various foods and their effect on blood glucose levels.
Living with Diabetes
This interactive class will explore the psychological adjustments inherent in living with diabetes. Participants will be encouraged to give examples of common stressors in their lives and various coping strategies will be presented and discussed.
Goal Setting and Problem Solving
The purpose of this class is to provide patients with resources and help increase positive thinking in diabetes care. Patients will also learn about goal setting and how to achieve goals related to diabetes self-management. Different situations will be presented as "problems" with examples of solutions.
Medication Management
This lecture is given to increase awareness of combination therapies including oral medications and insulin. Emphasis is given on educating patients about how the medications work, side effects associated with them as well as explaining onset, peak and duration of action of the various types of insulin out there.
Prevention of Acute Complications
Overview of the management of acute changes in blood glucose levels and the management of diabetes during days of illness.
Chronic/long term complications
The purpose of this class is to provide an overview of the major complications of diabetes. Our patients will be empowered with the knowledge of diabetes self-management in the prevention, delay and reduction of severity of the chronic complications associated with diabetes.
Carbohydrate Counting
The goal of this class is to review the importance of carbohydrate counting in diabetes. Patients will learn basic concepts of carbohydrate counting, as well as advanced skills for optimal blood glucose control. General nutrition tips, including meal planning, cooking techniques, dining out, and heart health will also be reviewed.
Diabetes and Pregnancy
This lecture is designed to educate women who are pregnant and have developed diabetes during pregnancy. Risk factors for gestational diabetes (GDM), diagnosis, blood sugar goals, medications used during pregnancy, medical monitoring to ensure a healthy pregnancy and decrease incidence of complications is emphasized.
Physical Activity
Being that regular physical activity is an important part of diabetes management, this class focuses on the relationship between exercise and diabetes mellitus while providing the tools for a safe and healthy exercise regimen.
Monitoring Diabetes
To provide an overview of methods for self-monitoring and discuss strategies for using self-monitoring results to improve diabetes control.
Healthy Holiday Eating
Holidays can be stressful when living with diabetes. Temptations are everywhere, time is limited, and no one wants to feel left out of the celebration because of a different diet. This class will empower people with different tips, suggestions, and creative solutions for eating healthy over the holiday season and into the new year.
Fad Diets
The purpose of this class is to teach patients about the different fad diets that exist and the risks and benefits of these diets in people living with diabetes. By the end of the class, patients will learn how to incorporate healthy changes into their lives to achieve long-term weight loss.
