Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Deaf Community Program

Hearing disorders are one of the nation's most common disabilities. Approximately 5 million Americans are considered deaf and nearly 28 million have some form of hearing impairment. At the Friedman Diabetes Institute, we're proud to have developed the nation's first diabetes education program specifically for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Our Deaf Community Program offers information on diabetes self management that is culturally sensitive and uses educational techniques, methods and materials that take into account deaf people's unique needs. The proper management of diabetes is crucial for living a full, healthy life and avoiding complications. With our Program, deaf people can have access to the same body of knowledge regarding diabetes self-management that hearing people have.

Program highlights include:

  • Monthly classes and workshops on the basics of diabetes and managing diabetes through nutrition, exercise, and medications.
  • Individual lessons on diabetes management and avoiding complications.
  • Certified Diabetes Educators - nurses, nutritionists, and exercise physiologists - working in collaboration with Sign Language Interpreters to educate patients.

We are continuously working to improve and expand our educational materials and handouts to meet the specific needs of deaf and hard of hearing patients. We also offer online resources through our Learn About Diabetes section of our Web site.

NEW!  We recently developed a series of animations specifically designed for deaf people with diabetes. Click here to watch them.
