World Diabetes Day 2019
Every year on November 14th, Friedman Diabetes Institute (FDI) runs an outreach event devoted to the World Diabetes Day. This time our team was located in the Lobby of the Lenox Hill Hospital on East 77th Street and at the FDI headquarters on East 59th Street.
World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about type 2 diabetes. Based on the latest data, about 425 million people around the world affected by this disease. That is a very high increase, comparing to 108 million people in 1980. By establishing World Diabetes day WHO and IDF wanted to help disseminate information of how to avoid contracting the illness.
This year again, FDI Team devoted a day to talk to New Yorkers about prevention of type 2 diabetes by living healthy. Our diabetes educators – nurses, dietitians and researchers shared information about symptoms of diabetes and the diagnostic tests, healthy eating and benefits of exercise. All the participants had the opportunity to check their knowledge by taking a brief quiz, and everybody got a reward for correct or corrected J answers. Over one thousand (1000) patients, their relatives and significant others, as well as Lenox Hill Hospital staff members participated in the event. We hope we made a difference in preventing the spread of type 2 diabetes and affected people’s life in a positive way.
See you next year!
